In a rush to show how even handed they are, the national media tripped over themselves when they compared Allen Iverson to John Rocker after the offensive lyrics to Iverson’s new rap album were publicized.
Iverson’s insulting comments about women, gays, other ethnic groups and violence were contained in the lyrics to his record. He was not speaking as Allen Iverson, but rather as a character in a song. The majority of recording artists sing their songs from the vantagepoint of some character. In this case Iverson was no different.
Iverson’s case is different than Rocker’s because Rocker made the comments as himself in the midst of a conversation with a reporter (although it says here Rocker is more stupid than racist and was just trying to live up to his outrageous reputation). One can fault Iverson for being stupid in releasing the record, as the lyrics are in bad taste and reflect poorly on him. One can also argue that as a role model for young kids, Iverson dropped the ball, especially since as a popular player Iverson knows that many children will purchase his album and be influenced by the words it contains. And for that you can also call Iverson greedy.
But to call Iverson a racist based on his lyrics is shortsighted. Iverson’s record is just another indication that he has a great deal of growing up to do.
They may be future Hall of Famers, but in the postseason Barry Bonds, Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens are choke artists.
Despised for his perceived treason in Boston, Clemens does not enjoy much more popularity in the Big Apple. It is ironic that the only 5 time Cy Young winner in Major League History does not have any real semblance of a fan following.
The fired Jim Fregosi got a raw deal in Toronto. If Raul Mondesi had not missed almost the entire second half of the season with an injury, the Jays likely would have made the playoffs.
So when does this women’s Ryder Cup thing start?
And while the Critic is asking questions, is the NHL playing this year?
