Review: X-Men: The Last Stand

“3″ Is Still Good CompanyÂ

It is very rare that the third movie of a trilogy stands up to comparison to the first two. X-Men: The Last Stand holds up very well, if you keep your expectations in check. Bryan Singer directed the first 2 X-Men movies, Brett Ratner this last one, and I suspect that only movie critics would know the difference or even care.

One of the most highly anticipated “pop” films of the summer, this movie delivers a roller-coaster ride’s worth of thrills and fun, less so sense and logic. You shouldn’t wait to see this decently fun film on DVD; go to a crowded theater and stuff your mouth with popcorn while “ooh”-ing and “aah”-ing at the screen.

X3 is not a great movie, but it delivers the full camp action and dialogue that everyone have been patiently awaiting. The well-known meta-gories and alle-phors are no less subtle than the first two films, but the sentiment still rings sincere. Most characters are as 2-dimensional as they are on the page, but they perform their mutant skills and unlayered emotions with de rigeur CGI and conviction.

Much like the food of summer, this movie is tasty, communal, broadly appealing and meaty. It is not light fare nor is it refined; it may be a little harder to digest, but it will, unlike most of the movies so far this spring, leave you full and sated.
